April 11, 2008 the Black Student Union at Point Loma Nazarene University (the college I attended) put on a spoken word poetry event. On this particular evening the DJ we’ve used in multiple events we put on decided to take the mic. He was a dark skinned black man with locs and plenty of facial hair describing the woman he was looking for. I listened to the poem intently as I did every other poet who went up on stage that night, but as I listened to his there was an overwhelming familiarity I could not deny. He spoke passionately of the woman he desired to love and how he was looking out for her, but had yet to find her. He ended his poem asking the question, “have you seen her?” Well, yeah! I actually was her & I told my friend who was standing next to me so. The woman he was describing was ME! It was crazy! Anyway, I have never been one to be forward with guys & I was definitely not about to walk up to that guy and tell him he just got done describing me. LOL! That night came & went…
Our first picture together 🙂
Eight months later we reconnected, began hanging out & chose love with one another. He was the first guy I brought home. He was not what anyone expected him to be. Shoot! He was not who I expected him to be, but sometimes God works that way. EVERYTHING about my life has told me to stop making plans, because God has bigger and far better plans for my life than I could ever dream of. That’s a whole other blog post in and of itself. Haha! This guy I’m speaking of is a rapper who goes by the name Beleaf Melanin. He’s a RAPPER! Did you catch that?! Anyone who knows or even used to know anything about me would never in a million years expect that I would date (and eventually marry) a rapper! LOL! It’s nuts! I’m often still in disbelief!
Wedded Bliss… 08.07.10
There’s so many layers to my husband, and I don’t mean to minimize him to this paragraph but for now this will have to do. Glen (his government name) had low confidence, and when he was deciding on his stage name he wanted something that when he heard it he would be reminded to believe in himself. He chose to spell “Beleaf” without the word “lie,” because he only wanted to believe things that were true. He grew up wanting to be white. His dad married a white woman and lived in California. He was born and raised in Baltimore. He further wanted his stage name to remind him to be proud of the skin that he’s in, which is where the “Melanin” came from. Melanin is the pigment that gives human skin it’s color. The more melanin one has the darker they are. Glen has a lot of melanin. Haha! So finally, to the point… I am Mrs. Melanin. When we were dating it was sort of an alter ego. Haha! However, Glen decided to make us official and so here I am. I’m more than proud to be his “Mrs.” He’s a remarkable man with a huge heart for the Lord & he finds enumerable ways to love me in spite of me. Aside from being his wife, I am also the mother of two of the most adorable chocolate babies you will ever meet… Theophilus Patrick & Uriah Beau! Our little fam bam lives in Vista. I am a math teacher at the middle school I attended in Oceanside. We attend church in San Marcos. I have an overwhelming desire to see the world outside of San Diego County. I have lived in North County my entire life outside of the years I stayed in the dorms at PLNU. I can’t seem to get away from this place, and to be honest I really don’t want to but I’d love to experience the rest of the world out there :). If I could begin my day on a morning hike watching the sun come up & end it with dinner at the beach watching the sun go down everyday I would! I am a California girl in love with God’s beautiful creation.
